From a New York City emergency room, 27 year-old Sumanah Khan
called her mom in Bangladesh, “Mom, I have an enlarged heart.”
“What are you talking about?” her mother retorted,
in the middle of hosting a luncheon half way around the world,
“Have you lost your mind?”
In fact, Sumanah was in critical condition. In typical mother/daughter
fashion, Sumanah said, “Don’t freak out. You don’t have to
come.” It didn’t take but a minute for Moni Khan to realize
the severity of her child’s situation when she replied, “I have
to come.”
A day later Moni was on a plane traveling 7,880 miles and having
no idea where she’d spend the night. Forced to give up her 5th
floor walk-up apartment during her recuperation, Sumanah was at
a loss as to where her and her mother could stay while she regained
her strength. A neighborhood friend visited and recommended Miracle
House through some research she had done on the Internet.
Mother and daughter have found comfort in
the shared apartments, where they can confide in their temporary
housemates and be supported by others facing serious medical
challenges. “The people we’ve
met have become our family. I feel so fortunate and want to
volunteer when I’m fully recovered. I’ll always be attached
to Miracle House. It’s an all-encompassing experience, and
people need to understand that.”
